Not all implants are equal.

We prefer using global gold standard Straumann® implant systems to make sure our work lasts as long as possible. Equally as important is the amount of preparation we undertake. We make no apology for spending a considerable amount of time scanning and analysing the implant site, gum and bone quality, to reduce the impact your implant may have on surrounding structures. Only this level of preparation, combined with the highest quality implant systems, and regenerative graft and prosthetic materials, will ensure minimal complications.

The root cause of the problem must be identified.

Quite often the need for an implant has been driven by a structural or lifestyle issue. Without addressing this underlying cause it is likely that surrounding teeth will develop similar problems, creating a cascade of interventions that leads to more treatments. It takes extensive training to identify these issues and develop a plan to mitigate them for long term success.

What to expect.

While the complexity of your dental implant procedure depends on the number of teeth needing to be replaced, the extent of the damage, and other factors, a typical implant follows the below process:

Diagnostic Assessment.

The proposed implant site is assessed for gum (soft tissues) and bone quality and volume through clinical measurements, dental photographs, casts, x-rays and integrated digital planning with CBCT/CT radiographic scans and intraoral surface scans.

Implanting in favourable parameters.

If parameters are favourable, dental implants may be used to replace failed or extracted teeth and the area may be restored with a temporary prosthesis during a single operation. However, in general, an implant is allowed to heal and osseointegrate (merge with the surrounding bone) for a minimum of 6 weeks before an impression is taken for prosthesis construction.

Implanting in unfavourable parameters.

For complex cases, such as when a patient has a medical history, pre-existing gum and bone (periodontal) disease, or a lack of bone volume, multiple failed and missing teeth, or poor bite relationship, an implant case may need to be managed by a highly experienced dental specialist team.

This process may require collaboration with an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon or Periodontist to complete gum and bone disease (periodontal) treatment, tissue grafting and surgical implant placement, while one of our Prosthodontists conducts prosthetic planning and implant crown/bridge/overdenture construction. In these cases, the treatment time may be lengthened in the best interest of the patient.

How long does a dental implant last?
Even after using the best possible implant techniques and highest quality materials, the longevity of your dental implant depends in large part on how well you look after it. With good oral hygiene and regular dental checks, your dental implant is aimed to last for decades. As part of our service, we may discuss lifestyle changes to consider that can increase the life of your treatment.
How long will my dental implant treatment take to complete?
When parameters are favourable, a prosthetic implant can be installed in a single surgery. However, more complex cases may require multiple surgeries to prepare the surrounding teeth, gum and bone, in order to ensure the site has the best chance of integration. Your treatment plan is fully customised to your specific needs and will be discussed in detail with you before any treatments are undertaken.
Do I need a Prosthodontist to complete my dental implant?
A Prosthodontist has undertaken a minimum of 3 years full-time specialist dental training, in addition to general dentist qualification. While dental implants can be completed by dentists, there are situations when a Prosthodontist is required to ensure the success of your dental implant treatment with as few future complications as possible. With over 90 years of combined dental experience and specialist dental training that spans the US, UK, Australia and South Africa, Prosthodontists at Centre for Prosthodontics are equipped to manage both simple implant cases, to challenging ones with high aesthetic and functional needs and expectations.
Do I need a referral to visit the Centre for Prosthodontics?
No, you do not, however we do recommend seeing your dentist before booking an appointment with our team.
HOW MUCH WILL MY TREATMENT COST?

Until we have a full plan in place we unfortunately cannot give cost estimates, as all our work is completed bespoke for each patient. However, all costs associated with your treatment are provided in detail before any work begins. Click here to find out more.
